In holdem, the initial step is to get the game started, and for this the competitors put out a certain total of money. ‘Posting the blinds’ is the commonly used saying for this play. In the following step, the dealer shuffles the deck of cards and deals out two cards face down to all players. A normal deck of fifty two playing cards is used. After the deal, there is the first round of betting. This sequence is usually referred to as a "pre-flop".

After the 1st wagering round, the first card is tossed aside. This discarded card is known as the "burn card", and this is performed to ensure there is definitely no cheating. The following 3 cards are then dealt face up on the table. These cards are ‘the flop’. Now comes a 2nd round of betting, after which the croupier throws away a further card and deals 1 more card onto the poker table.
