In holdem, the initial step is to get the game started, and for this the competitors put out a certain total of money. ‘Posting the blinds’ is the commonly used saying for this play. In the following step, the dealer shuffles the deck of cards and deals out two cards face down to all players. A normal deck of fifty two playing cards is used. After the deal, there is the first round of betting. This sequence is usually referred to as a "pre-flop".
After the 1st wagering round, the first card is tossed aside. This discarded card is known as the "burn card", and this is performed to ensure there is definitely no cheating. The following 3 cards are then dealt face up on the table. These cards are ‘the flop’. Now comes a 2nd round of betting, after which the croupier throws away a further card and deals 1 more card onto the poker table. After this, competitors can use the 6th card to create a 5card poker hand.
A further round of wagering happens, and in many styles of games, here is where the wager size increases. There is an additional round of burning a card, and a closing deal of a card face-up on the poker table. This is referred to as the "river". Gamblers can now make use of any of the five cards on the board, or the 2 cards that they are holding, to form a five-card poker hand.
To wrap it up there is a last sequence of wagering. After that, all the players remaining begin to reveal their hands. This is referred to as the "showdown". Obviously, the bettor who holds the greatest hand wins. When players have tied hands a sharing of the winnings is considered.
Holdem is a very easy game to understand, but to achieve ability one needs a lot of studying.
