Howard Lederer grew up in a family of 5 in which he loved taking part in various card games when he was young. He discovered himself becoming really competitive in these particular card games while playing his dad. After graduating from Sr. High school, Howard decided to put college on hold for a bit and headed to New York to compete in some serious chess. While competing in chess, he was brought in to a poker game going on in the back of the room. Howard’s initial 2 years were rough as he would play many hours and lose most times. He earned some additional money by being an runner for the poker players. He theorized he could better his game by balancing his life outside of poker. He brought about an effort to acquire more sleep and concentrate even more on the game.

The definite improvement in his game happened when he began playing at the Mayfair Club in New York. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon club where the best gamblers would frequently compete against one another. He was able to access a number of the foremost players in chess. With their help, Howard would hone his cunning thinking abilities. He used these strategic ideas in the game of No-Limit holdem.

Howard Lederer also assisted his sister Annie Duke master poker. Annie was a great student of poker as she constantly asked questions about the right way to make the correct decision. Howard told Annie Duke to head out to Las Vegas and compete in the World Series of Poker competition. Annie Duke is one of the greatest female players the poker world has ever seen. He headed to Vegas in Nineteen Ninety Three and played money games for the subsequent 10 years. When the WPT gained popularity, Howard decided to participate in more tournaments.
