Phil Ivey has been branded as the number one poker contender in the world by many of the top-ranked professionals. Phil Ivey was born in Riverside, CA and relocated to New Jersey before reaching the age of one. His grandfather taught him one cent-ante 5-Card Stud poker. From that point on, Phil was addicted to poker and wished to pickup whatever he possibly could about poker. Phil routinely would tell his elders that he wanted to be a professional poker player. He did not permit the adverse feedback from others annihilate his dream of being one of the best poker competitors in the world.
He began playing seriously after acquiring a false ID with the name of Jerome. He honed his techniques at the casinos of Atlantic City. The beginning few years for Phil were a teaching period and winning wasn’t a normal thing at the time. Phil made his mark at the 2000 World Series of Poker where he achieved 2 final tables and came away with his first World Series of Poker bracelet, in a $2, five hundred Pot-Limit Omaha game. At the last table he destroyed quite a few of the better known professionals including "Amarillo Slim" Preston, David "Devilfish" Ulliot, and Phil Hellmuth, Jr.
He decided to take his game to the next level and moved out west to Sin City. Phil continues to play in "The Big Game" at the Bellagio with the best players on the planet. Phil credits his success to hard work and an eternal love for the game of poker. He states that he is learning every day and is very humble about his accomplishments. Phil admits to making blunders every single session of poker and always strives to improve.
Despite the fact that Ivey has won some large tournaments, he likes winning cash games on a normal basis.
