Howard Lederer grew up in a family of five in which he liked playing various card games when he was young. He discovered himself getting very competitive in these card games while competing against his father. After finishing secondary school, Howard made a decision to put college on hold for a little while and moved away to New York to compete in some big-time chess. While playing chess, he was brought in to a poker game taking place in the back of the room. Howard’s first 2 years were tough as he would play countless hours and do not win most times. He made some extra money by becoming an runner for the poker enthusiasts. He judged he could improve his game by analyzing his life outside of poker. He made an effort to acquire more rest and focus more on poker.
The definite advancement in his abilities began when he started wagering at the Mayfair Club in New York. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon association where the the most favorable gamblers would often challenge one another. Howard had access into a few of the foremost players in chess. With their assistance, Howard would hone his logical thinking abilities. Howard used these strategic ideas in the game of No-Limit holdem.
Howard also helped his sibling Annie Duke master poker. She was a superb student of the game as she constantly asked questions about the right way to make the correct decision. Howard told Annie Duke to move out to Vegas and compete in the World Series of Poker tournaments. Annie Duke is one of the greatest women players the poker arena today. Howard Lederer relocated to Vegas in 1993 and played cash games for the subsequent decade. When the WPT grew in popularity, Howard decided to play more tournaments.
