Phil Ivey has been labeled as the best poker player in the world by many of the top-ranked pros. He was born in Riverside, CA and relocated to New Jersey before reaching the age of one. His grandfather taught Phil one cent-ante Five-Card Stud poker. From then on on, Phil was addicted to poker and wished to learn everything he could about poker. Phil routinely told his grandparents that he wanted to be a professional poker player. He didn’t allow the negative feedback from others kill his goal of being one of the greatest poker competitors on the planet.

He began competing intently after getting a fake ID by the name of Jerome. He practiced his skills at the poker rooms of Atlantic City. The initial number of years for him were a teaching period and coming away with a win was not a common outcome at the time. He made his mark at the 2000 WSOP when he made 2 final tables and came away with his first World Series of Poker bracelet, in a two dollar, 500 Pot-Limit Omaha event. At the last table he defeated a number of the better known professionals including but not limited to "Amarillo Slim" Preston, David "Devilfish" Ulliot, and Phil Hellmuth, Jr.

He made a decision to take his game to the successive level and headed out west to Vegas. He continues to participate in in "The Big Game" at the Bellagio with the greatest players in the world. Phil credits his success to dedication and an eternal love for the game of poker. He states that he’s picking up skills every day and is very abashed about his accomplishments. Phil admits to making blunders in each game of poker and always aspires to improve.

Although Ivey has won some large tournaments, he favors winning cash games on a regular basis.
