Phil Ivey has been labeled as the number one poker competitor on the planet by many of the top-ranked professionals. He was born in Riverside, CA and moved to New Jersey before his first birthday. His grandfather taught Phil one cent-ante 5-Card Stud poker. From then on on, Phil was addicted to poker and wanted to pickup whatever he possibly could about poker. Phil routinely would tell his grandparents that he wanted to be a professional poker player. Phil didn’t let the detrimental feedback from others annihilate his dream of being one of the strongest poker players in the world.
He began competing seriously after acquiring a false ID with the name of Jerome. He practiced his abilities at the poker rooms of Atlantic City. The first few years for Phil were a teaching period and winning wasn’t a normal thing at the time. Phil became known at the 2000 World Series of Poker when he made two final tables and came away with his first World Series of Poker bracelet, in a two dollar, five hundred Pot-Limit Omaha event. At the final table he defeated quite a few of the better known professionals which includes "Amarillo Slim" Preston, David "Devilfish" Ulliot, and Phil Hellmuth, Jr.
Phil made a decision to take his skills to the next level and headed out west to Vegas. He continues to participate in in "The Big Game" at the Bellagio with the best players on the planet. Ivey credits his success to hard work and an immeasurable passion for the game of poker. He states that he’s picking up skills every single day and is quite humble about his success. Phil admits to making mistakes every single game of poker and always strives to improve.
Despite the fact that Phil has come first in some big tournaments, he prefers winning money games on a regular basis.
